Windrose Ships Guide: Ketch, Brigantine & Frigate (2026)
Your ship is your home, your weapon, and your lifeline in Windrose. Ships are not built piece-by-piece — you unlock blueprints and construct the vessel as a whole at a Wharf. Every ship class comes in three distinct variants: Stock (balanced), Brethren (tanky/high cargo), and Blackbeard (fast/high firepower).
Ship Variant Comparison
| Class | Variant | HP | Speed (kn) | Key Characteristics |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ketch (Tier 1) | Stock | 50,000 | 19 | Balanced starter ship; early exploration and basic combat |
| Brethren | 65,000 | 17 | Highest health and cargo capacity in tier | |
| Blackbeard | 35,000 | 21 | Fastest; highest cannon capacity in tier | |
| Brigantine (Tier 2) | Stock | 70,000 | 20 | Solid mid-game all-rounder |
| Brethren | 90,000 | 18 | Heavy armor and cargo space | |

Ship Overviews
Ketch (Tier 1)
Your first real ship. Fast and agile. Perfect for solo play and early exploration. Low firepower but great maneuverability.
Brigantine (Tier 2)
The mid-game workhorse. Balanced speed and firepower. The recommended choice for most content and boss encounters.
Frigate (Tier 3)
Endgame warship. Heavy firepower and armor. A floating fortress with the largest crew capacity for fleet combat.
Strategic Recommendations
- The Blackbeard Advantage: Many experienced players favor the Blackbeard variant across all tiers. While it has lower health, its superior speed allows you to outmaneuver enemies, and its ability to mount larger-caliber cannons significantly increases damage output.
- Progression path: Start by repairing the Ketch via the main quest. Save Piastre and materials to jump to the Brigantine for mid-game. Invest in the Frigate once you have endgame resources and high reputation.
- Ship gear slots: Ships have four gear slots for cannons and equipment, managed at the Wharf. Prioritize high-poundage cannons on Blackbeard ships for aggressive naval combat.
- Don't rush naval combat: Build a Wharf to manage your ship. Prioritize health over raw firepower early on, as you will likely be outnumbered.
Ship Progression Path
- Starter Raft: The basic vessel you begin with. Limited in every way but sufficient for the tutorial area.
- Ketch: Your first real ship. Unlocked via the main quest “I Need A Bigger Boat.” Ideal for early exploration and learning naval combat.
- Brigantine: The mid-game workhorse. Requires Reputation Level 2 with the Brethren of the Coast and 1,000 Piastre for the blueprint. Recommended for most content.
- Frigate: The endgame warship. Requires Reputation Level 4 and 3,000 Piastre. Best saved for late-game challenges and fleet-scale battles.
Naval Combat Overview
Ranged Cannon Combat
All ships are equipped with broadside cannons. Positioning is critical — keep your side facing the enemy while minimizing your own exposure. Different cannon types (standard shot, chain shot for sails, heavy shot for armor) provide tactical options depending on your goal.
Boarding & Melee Combat
Once an enemy ship's armor is sufficiently depleted, you can grapple and board for melee combat. Boarding lets you capture ships intact and loot more resources. Your crew's melee stats and equipment determine boarding success.
Seamless Land-Ship Switching
Windrose features seamless transitions between land exploration and naval gameplay. Dock at any coastline, disembark to explore islands on foot, and return without loading screens.
Ship Upgrades & Customization
All ships can be upgraded and customized at the Wharf. Key upgrade categories:
- Cannon Upgrades: Increase firepower, reload speed, and unlock specialty ammunition types.
- Hull Reinforcements: Boost armor and structural integrity. Essential for surviving boss encounters.
- Sail Improvements: Enhance speed and turning radius for maneuverability-focused playstyles.
- Cosmetics: Figureheads, sail patterns, hull paints, and lantern colors for visual personalization.
