Windrose Smelting Recipes
Convert raw ore into usable metal ingots — the foundation of all advanced crafting.
Smelting Overview
Smelting refines raw ore into metal ingots, which are essential for tools, weapons, ammunition, and structures. Two stations are required: the Charcoal Kiln (produces fuel + ash) and the Smelting Furnace (converts ore into ingots).
The smelting chain is the core mid-game gate. Without it you're stuck at stone-tier equipment forever.
Prerequisite Stations
Both must be built within the same Bonfire radius before smelting is possible.
| Station | Purpose | Materials | Prerequisite |
|---|---|---|---|
| Charcoal Kiln | Charcoal (fuel) + Ash (gunpowder) | 25 Wood + 20 Clay | Stone Pickaxe |
| Smelting Furnace | Ore → Ingots | 15 Clay + 30 Stone | Stone Pickaxe |
Smelting Recipes
Load ore + Charcoal into the Furnace. Each operation consumes 1 Charcoal.
| Output | Input | Fuel | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Copper Ingot ×1 | 6 Copper Ore | 1 Charcoal | First metal; unlocks copper tools, nails, bell |
| Foothills Iron Ingot ×1 | Iron Ore (qty TBD) | 1 Charcoal | Mid-game; Anvil, WB Lv2-3, iron equipment |
Charcoal Kiln: Dual Output
The Kiln produces two outputs from one input:
| Input | Output 1 | Output 2 |
|---|---|---|
| 1 Wood | 1 Charcoal | Ash (byproduct) |
Charcoal fuels the Furnace; Ash is needed for Gunpowder. The Kiln is the engine of your economy — keep it running continuously.
Gunpowder Production Chain
Combine Kiln output with Foothills resources for unlimited ammo material:
- Build a Millstone — unlocked by finding Corn at a Foothills Ancient Farm.
- Mine Sulfur — yellow deposits in the Foothills (Copper Pickaxe+).
- Collect Ash — automatic Kiln byproduct.
- Combine — 10 Sulfur + 20 Ash = Gunpowder at Millstone.
You can hire an NPC worker at the Millstone to boost output. Before the Millstone, Gunpowder is loot-only from pirate camps.
Additional Furnace Uses
- Clay Pot — bake Clay at the Furnace; essential for Alchemy and water.
- Advanced Ingots — later biomes introduce Steel and Mithril ore using the same workflow.
- Tarred Planks — some ship/building recipes need furnace-processed wood.

| Recipe | Ingots | Ore (×6) | Charcoal |
|---|---|---|---|
| Copper Axe | 5 | 30 | 5 |
| Copper Pickaxe | 5 | 30 | 5 |
| Fast Travel Bell | 10 | 60 | 10 |
| Sawhorse (WB Lv2) | 10 | 60 | 10 |
| Weaponsmith | 5 | 30 | 5 |
| Total core | 35 | 210 | 35 |
Tips & Strategy
- Gather 35+ Clay early — Kiln (20) + Furnace (15) + Clay Pots.
- Stockpile Wood — Kiln costs 25 Wood to build, plus ongoing charcoal fuel.
- Copper first, always — Copper tools unlock iron deposits.
- Never idle the Kiln — stockpile Ash for gunpowder even before you need it.
- Place within Bonfire radius — all stations must be in the zone to function.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many Copper Ore for one ingot?
6 Copper Ore + 1 Charcoal = 1 Copper Ingot.
Can I smelt without a Charcoal Kiln?
No. The Furnace requires Charcoal, which only comes from the Kiln. The Kiln is mandatory.
What is Ash used for?
Ash + Sulfur at the Millstone = Gunpowder for ammunition crafting.
Should I smelt Copper or Iron first?
Always Copper. You need Copper tools to reach Iron Ore in the Foothills.
How many Copper Ingots for basic progression?
35 Copper Ingots minimum (210 Ore + 35 Charcoal) for Axe, Pickaxe, Bell, Sawhorse, and Weaponsmith.
